Standard :
Une étude approfondie s’impose en tant que connaisseur, technicien et utilisateur.
Quand on s’intéresse à un chien, il faut savoir pour quelle raison il est construit de telle façon, pour quoi il est nécessaire qu’il le demeure et quelles peuvent être les influences de tel ou tel défaut sur son allure et sa façon de chasser en modifiant le standard. Il ne fait pas oublier que c’est grâce à sa rusticité, à la nature de son poil lui permettant de ne craindre ni l’eau ni le fourré, tout autant qu’à ses qualités de nez et d’allure, que le Barbet est capable de donner à son propriétaire la satisfaction d’un excellent collaborateur pour la chasse…
N’oublions pas aussi que notre chien doit être le compagnon des bons et mauvais moments et que, dans ses yeux embroussaillés, nous devons y lire :

BARBET
ORIGINE : France.
DATE DE PUBLICATION DU STANDARD D’ORIGINE EN VIGUEUR : 21.02.2006.
UTILISATION : Chien d’eau pour la chasse à la sauvagine. Le Barbet, comme tous les chiens d’eau est plus qu’un simple rapporteur, il doit rechercher et débusquer le gibier caché dans la végétation aquatique et le faire lever. Il rapporte ensuite la pièce tirée par son maître. Ne craint pas le froid, va à l’eau par tous les temps.

BREF APERCU HISTORIQUE : Très ancienne race, commune dans toute la France, utilisée pour la chasse au gibier d’eau, décrite ou citée dans plusieurs ouvrages dès le 16ème siècle.
ASPECT GENERAL : Chien de type médioligne, de taille moyenne, caractérisé par une épaisse toison laineuse qui lui assure une protection efficace contre le froid et l’humidité. Le poil forme une barbe au menton, ce qui a donné le nom à la race.
PROPORTIONS IMPORTANTES : Museau légèrement plus court que le crâne.
La longueur du corps, mesurée de la pointe de l’épaule à la pointe de la fesse, est légèrement supérieure à la hauteur au garrot.
COMPORTEMENT / CARACTERE : Equilibré, très attaché à ses maîtres, très sociable, aimant l’eau, même très froide.
TETE : le poil du crâne doit retomber jusqu’au chanfrein. La barbe est longue et fournie ; la moustache recouvre tout le chanfrein ; elle est très fournie.
REGION CRANIENNE :
Crâne : Arrondi et large.
Stop : Marqué.
REGION FACIALE :
Truffe : Large, aux narines bien ouvertes, de couleur noire ou marron selon la couleur de la robe.
Museau : Bien carré. Le chanfrein est large.
Lèvres : Epaisses, bien pigmentées, entièrement recouvertes de poils longs. Le bord des lèvres est noir ou marron.
Mâchoires/dents : Mâchoires d’égale longueur. Articulé en ciseaux. Denture forte. Incisives bien développées et bien rangées.
Yeux : Ronds, de préférence marron foncé. Le bord des paupières est noir ou marron.
Oreilles : Attachées bas (à la hauteur de l’œil ou un peu plus bas), longues, plates, larges, garnies de longs poils formant des mèches. Lorsqu’on les rassemble devant la truffe, elles dépassent celle-ci d’au moins 5 cm (avec le poil). Le cartilage des oreilles dépasse la commissure des lèvres.
COU : Court et fort.
CORPS :
Dos : Dos solide, dessus bien soutenu.
Rein : Voussé, court et fort.
Croupe : Profil arrondi, prolongeant harmonieusement la ligne du rein.
Poitrine : Large, bien développée, haute, descendant au niveau du coude ; côtes arrondies mais pas en tonneau.
QUEUE : Un peu relevée, dépassant l’horizontale quand le chien est en action, attachée bas, formant un léger crochet à l’extrémité.
MEMBRES
MEMBRES ANTERIEURS :
Epaules : Obliques. L’angle scapulo-huméral varie entre 110 et 115°.
Bras : Forts et musclés.
Avant-bras : Droits, forte ossature, bien d’aplomb, complètement recouverts de poils longs.
MEMBRES POSTERIEURS :
Cuisses : Légèrement obliques, bien gigotées.
Jarrets : Bas, bien coudés.
Métatarses : D’aplomb.
PIEDS : Ronds, larges, recouverts de poils.
ALLURES / MOUVEMENT : Allures faciles, les membres se déplaçant dans l’axe du corps. Extension moyenne des antérieurs et bonne poussée des postérieurs.
PEAU : Relativement épaisse.
ROBE
POIL : Long, laineux, frisé, pouvant former des mèches. Le poil est fourni, recouvrant tout le corps à l’état naturel. C’est une caractéristique essentielle de la race. La barbet peut être toiletté de façon spécifique pour faciliter son travail et son entretien.
COULEUR : Unicolore noir, gris, marron, fauve, sable, blanc, ou plus ou moins panaché. Toutes les nuances du fauve et du sable sont acceptées. La nuance devra de préférence être la même sur l’ensemble du corps.
TAILLE ET POIDS :
Hauteur au garrot : pour les mâles : 58 cm à 65 cm
Pour les femelles : 53 cm à 61 cm
Avec tolérance de + ou – 1 centimètre.
DEFAUTS : Tout écart par rapport à ce qui précède doit être considéré comme un défaut qui sera pénalisé en fonction de sa gravité.
· Tête fine et étroite, chanfrein mince et trop long, lèvres fines.
· Prognathisme supérieur ou inférieur. Mâchoire déviée.
· Yeux clairs.
· Oreilles attachées haut (plus haut que l’œil), fines, courtes, étroites.
· Cou grêle.
· Ligne du dessus creuse.
· Rein long et faible.
· Croupe étroite.
· Poitrine étroite.
· Queue attachée haut, recourbée sur le dos, enroulée ou plaquée sur la croupe ou le rein. Anourie, brachyourie.
· Epaules étroites.
· Bras maigres.
· Avant-bras d’une ossature fine, membre frangé.
· Membres postérieurs : Cuisse plate, jarrets droits, membre frangé ; présence d’ergots. Pieds fins et étroits, découverts.
· Peau fine.
· Poil court, rêche, non laineux, non frisé.
· Couleurs : Toutes autres robes que celles mentionnées dans le standard.
DEFAUTS ELIMINATOIRES :
· Chien agressif ou peureux.
Tout chien présentant de façon évidente des anomalies d’ordre physique ou comportemental sera disqualifié.
N.B. : Les mâles doivent avoir deux testicules d’aspect normal complètement descendus dans le scrotum.

UTILIZATION: Water dog used for hunting wildfowl. Like all water dogs, the French Water Dog is more than just a retriever; he must search for, locate and flush out the game hiding in the water vegetation. He then retrieves the game shot by his master. Very resistant to cold, he shall go to water in all weather.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: A very ancient breed, common throughout France, used for hunting waterfowl and described or mentioned in several works as early as the 16th century.
GENERAL APPEARANCE: Medium proportions, medium size, characterized by a thick, woolly coat which guarantees efficient protection against cold and damp. The coat forms a beard (French barbe) on the chin, which gave the breed its name (Barbet).
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS:
• The muzzle is slightly shorter than the skull.
• The length of the body, measured from the point of shoulder to the point of buttock, is slightly more than the height at the withers .
BEHAVIOUR/TEMPERAMENT: Even disposition, very attached to his master, very sociable, loving water even when very cold.
HEAD: The coat on the skull must fall onto the bridge of the nose. The beard is long and furnished; the moustache entirely covers the bridge of the nose.
CRANIAL REGION:
Skull: Rounded and broad.
Stop: Defined.
FACIAL REGION:
Nose: Broad, with well opened nostrils; black or brown depending on the colour of the coat.
Muzzle: Quite square. The bridge of the nose is broad.
Lips: Thick, well pigmented and completely covered by long hair. Black or brown edges.
Jaws/teeth: Jaws of equal length. Scissors bite. Strong teeth. Incisors well developed and well aligned.
Eyes: Round, preferably dark brown. The rim of the eyelid is black or brown.
Ears: Set on low (at eye level or slightly lower), long, flat, wide, covered by long hair hanging in strands. When brought together in front of the nose, the ears (including the hair) reach at least 5cms beyond it. The ear cartilage reaches further than the corner of the mouth.
NECK: Short and strong.
BODY:
Back: Solid with well sustained topline.
Loin: Arched, short and strong.
Croup: Round, seen from the side, in smooth continuation of the line of the loin.
Chest: Broad, well developed, deep, reaching the elbow; ribcage rounded but not barrel-like.
TAIL:
Slightly raised, carried above the horizontal when the dog is in action, low set, forming a slight hook at the tip.
LIMBS:
FOREQUARTERS:
Shoulders: Oblique. The scapulo-humeral angle varies between 110° and 115°.
Upper arm: Strong and muscular.
Lower arm: Straight, strong bone, upright, completely covered by long hair.
HINDQUARTERS:
Upper thigh: Slightly oblique, well muscled.
Hock: Low, well angulated.
Metatarsus (Rear pastern): Upright.
FEET: Round, broad, covered by hair.
MOVEMENT/GAIT: Easy movement, the limbs moving in line with the body. Medium length foreleg stride with good thrust from the hindquarters.
SKIN: Relatively thick.
COAT:
HAIR: Long, woolly and curly; can form strands. The coat is furnished, covering the whole body in a natural state. This is an essential characteristic of the breed. The French Water Dog may be groomed in a specific manner to accomodate its work and maintenance.
COLOUR: Solid black, grey, brown, fawn, pale fawn, white or more or less pied. All shades of red-fawn and pale fawn are permitted. The shade should, preferably, be the same as the colour of the body.
SIZE:
Height at the withers: Dogs: 58cm – 65cm
Bitches: 53cm – 61 cm
With a tolerance of +/- 1cm
FAULTS:
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree.
• Head fine and narrow, muzzle thin and too long, lips thin.
• Overshot or undershot. Wry jaw.
• Light eyes.
• Ears set high (higher than eye level), thin, short and narrow.
• Neck long and thin.
• Topline hollow.
• Loin long and weak.
• Croup straight.
• Chest narrow.
• Tail set on high, curved over the back, curled over or lying on the croup or loin. Tail naturally absent or too short.
• Shoulders straight.
• Upper arm thin.
• Forearm with fine bone; feathering.
• Hindquarters: Upper thigh flat, hocks straight, feathering; presence of dewclaws. Feet fine and narrow, not covered by coat.
• Skin thin.
• Coat short, harsh, not woolly, not curly.
• Colours: Any colour other than those mentioned in the standard.
ELIMINATING FAULTS:
• Aggressive or overly shy.
Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities shall be disqualified.
N.B.: Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
