About dog shows, breeders and the likes envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 26/05/2010 @ 08:11
YES....on all counts.

Please feel free to crosspost.

( This came from the Parti Poodle group I belong to).

Of rice and dogs/ Thelma's line is a working line envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 25/05/2010 @ 22:21
Booly Wooly was mated to D'jazzy des Grèves d'Armor.YES.

I had announced that a few weeks ago( without any details)...

Why am I talking about it now?

As many of you know ( most of you) I am 150% against mating with certain lines.

I was asked if my Booly Wooly could be used because he comes from a "working line" and he has excellent character.

AS I coincidentally talked today about "working ability"...well....he has it and it comes from Thelma and the "old bloodlines". Thelma, his mother, who is the kindest best dog one could ever have. That natural working ability. it's built in.

Thelma's daughter, Dona is a Guide dog for the blind in Paris and they are very happy with her. They are less happy with the "working ability" of other they needed some "working dog" blood added to start a line "FOR GUIDE DOGS ONLY" and Booly Wooly was the one who could do it. They will not be show dogs, they may all have the tail over the back, but that was not the problem addressed.

So if you read about this mating was to improve a line with my line's blood, not to make another "family" bigger.
That is not a criteria when choosing a dog.
Trainabilty, character and intelligence are.

The mating went very well. It took 5 mns?! OK, 7.

You do please keep in mind that Bijou, dear Bijou is Booly Wooly's sister...just in case you didn't remember. And let's keep all of this in the right perspective!Ulysse is also in Thelma's family.

Still speaking of Bijou and the price of rice? envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 25/05/2010 @ 12:13

Here's a shot of her at 2 weeks old(over 4 years ago)...her pups look like her and Compay and I think that is grand. Thank you for giving her so much attention, she is a wonderful Babe....Her pups are 2 weeks old today, that is grand, too.

Speaking of Bijou again...and bloodhounds! envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 25/05/2010 @ 11:47
I am hearing that some people are worried about what is being done to the breed and that people may turn away from the breed thinking it is a pure HUNTER. That is not the case at all, meaning that some lines have "working ability".They don't all have "working ability" and some cannot even swim!
That doesn't mean either that the minute you open the back door, he will run out to chase wild animals (or ducks)
It means that when you teach him something, he is able to do what you asked him to do quickly and well because he understands rapidly.
Some hunt and do it very well.It does take training and if you don't want a hunter, then don't train them.

The Barbet is a malleable dog, pliable, he will do what you teach him to regardless of what it is.Even if he will be ridiculed, he will do it to make you happy.

HOWEVER he is a water retriever, just like the GOLDEN RETRIEVER and the LABRADOR which are 2 of the most popular dogs in the world. They do not have the same character as a Barbet...but they are in the same group, the 8th group.
So, conclude from that!

To resume, a Barbet can do anything a "water dog" can and is supposed to do. Some lines can work, others can't.

And the 6th group: Bloodhounds are not recommended as pets. They are only bloodhounds, and the Barbet can do that too, but that is absolutely not his reason for being.
There are 6th group dogs to do that and there are enough short coated dogs in that group.
They are not water retrievers and no one will ask them to do that.
The Barbet has also been a circus dog...

Speaking of Bijou... envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 25/05/2010 @ 11:29
To let you know:

The French Water Dog forum has been suspended because it didn't really correspond to the objectives that had been originally set by the members
of " Barbet: old bloodlines"and their survival.
I had expressed my thoughts about what was going on there. I don't think I need to re-hash.
There is another forum, and it's there for all of everybody who wants to go.
Have a good day!
