He never even moved! envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 16/05/2010 @ 08:51

I had to undo my "bed" from under him, sliding him from left to right...he never moved a muscle.Do you think I let him get away with too much? I do, but with such a great Guyguy, would you do anything else? He was and is my sweetie from my first ever litter, 4+ years ago...and he knows it.My dogs make it worth all the fighting for their survival...the survival of the "old bloodlines".

Oh gosh, now I need to go see who's been squatting the forum again...best to have morning coffee first, now that I've had my tea!
Perhaps I'll treat myself to a croissant, what the heck, it's Sunday. No sun, and about 14°C or less...but sun in my heart with Bijou's litter growing nicely!

Bibiche di Barbochos de Reiau de Prouvenco

When you think about the time it takes to do what you are going to watch, you wonder how many Barbets, regardless of some of the titles they bear, can do this? This is months and months and months of intensive training. Most admirable and an honor for the "old bloodlines".
I know of 4 (alive). Off the top of my head...and probably the Polish Barbets!
And Nenu, daughter of Borée di Barbochos de Reiau de Prouvenco, in Great Britain.

Wow.Chapeau bas, Jacques...!! Chapeau bas. This needs to be sent to professional trainers everywhere!

And even shaved, Bibiche doesn't look like anything but a Barbet.

Fabulous! A grand Barbet in 1827 envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 12/05/2010 @ 19:18

By "Grand" back in the 19th century they meant a dog of about 53 cms as the petit Barbet was equivalent to the size of a Bichon. You need to keep in mind our sizes in the 21st century are not comparable to the siezs back then. People and dogs were much smaller.

Look at the size of the head and the legs. they are not long. However the body is longer and not square like the one of a poodle.
This dates back to 1827. Notice how the coat/hair grows down and not out, and in front of the eyes, it is cut a bit so the dog can see. The 2 dogs are very much alike. The body is not barrel-like, short and stocky as would be the Barbet's Spanish cousin, the Spanish Water Dog.
On the right Django de la serve de la Chapelle d'Alexandre.
Below: Bacchus di Barbochos Reiau de Prouvenco!

Look at those magnificent curly locks!

Hunting dogs in those days were lighter colored. Keep in mind that Emmanuel Boulet took 20 years to make a brown colored to and he had to eliminate the light colors that were common ( think of the Spinone, for example). The best color was fawn or fawn and white which evolved in the 19th century.

All of this was of course, coherent with the standards until 1986 when poodles were subsituted for Barbets and slowly but surely solid black became a common color and white was around as it was also a standard poodle color.(nose, toes and inside the mouth must also be looked at to determine colors.)
There's always an explanation for everything!
Even the coat texture is different; just because a dog is white means nothing. The same goes for the black. It sghould be curly, not frizzy and grow down regardless of the color.

We did it. YIPPIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! envoyé par Elaine Fichter le 11/05/2010 @ 22:33
To Göran, Ritva, Anne and all of you supporting this endeavour: Bijou Babe de la Serve de la Chapelle d'Alexandre, owned by Ritva and Göran Sjöstrom of Nelum Himalis Kennel in Finland, gave birth this evening, to 5 Barbichons. 3 males 2 females/ all black (some Compays: with the same white markings/ gloves).
Mom Bijou has been waiting her turn for a long time! She's fine and dad Compay has proven once again, that he is a racer.

Bijou is not only a good mother, but she is a very happy one. When you think of how long she's been wanting to have her own pups to play with...!

Recap: Mom Bijou Babe/ Dad CH-Compay II de la serve de la Chapelle d'Alexandre.

Here are their future names, as I had saved these names for Bijou...(although she was not announced to have 5, but less!)
France ( Gall the singer or Michel Sardou's song!)

French water dog( because because ...)
French Barbet( because because...I will have popped my clogs the next time the "F"'s come around!)
