When you think about it...the Portuguese water dog and the poodle could have been the same family, but just because the Barbet swims doesn't mean that morphologically it is from the poodle family. Keep in mind that Barbet was a generic word for a dog with a beard back in the 18th century. There is also a fish called a barbet and a bird. Sometimes, some barbets have only that in common! Breeds were "made" after that. We need to have the same references before we can be sure of this or that or whatever we feel certain of. I think I am in the right direction to go back to 1891 and the standard.

...........or: the proof is in the pudding!
Left to right: Thesée from Mrs Pêtre,Thales* de la perte aux loups, Cid di Barbochos de Reiau de Prouvenco, Poppenspaler's Cassis aka Unikko. Thesée goes back to R'Lucky,so by deduction he goes back to the 1920's original line since the SCC ( French Kennel Club) records have been kept and they created their "families". Before that, as it says in most old books, dogs that sometimes had nothing to do with each other were called by the same name. That SCC classification put and end to those practices. Dogs had standards and there were judges who were to guarantee that a given dog corresponded to what was described in the standrd. Notice the 3 dogs share the same morphology. The brown color comes from Poppenspalers' Vincacao, but further back from Ursus de Neguebous (Noe x Sardane). Again, it's nice to have a pedigree as a starting point for research but since they are not guranteed to be correct, it is better to work from photographs and reconstruct. That's a safe method. Longer, but safe. AND it works!
