P:Photos to depict the standard

The Barbet has particular points that make it different from a poodle...The morphology is different, to start with.

The standard was written in 1891 and has changed several times, not necessarily for the better, but to help ones and others fit their production.
The last modification was most illegally made without anyone being consulted. This was in 2005 and there was no General Assembly, no discussions nor any votes. It was immediately applicable which for a rare breed is suicidal.
However, from people misinterpreting the standard, things which were defects could become the "norm" if we are not very attentive to what we are doing.

The translation of the standard into English is not necessarily the same meaning as in French.
As the question was asked at the first meeting of the breeding commission ( 8/09)(CTE) and received no answer, I can only sometimes mention the English part with a photo.
The following photos should help you interpret the standard properly.

HEAD: The coat on the skull must fall onto the bridge of the nose. The beard is long and furnished; the moustache entirely covers the bridge of the nose.

[centrer]

EARS: Set on low (at eye level or slightly lower), long, flat, wide, covered by long hair hanging in strands. When brought together in front of the nose, the ears (including the hair) reach at least 5cms beyond it. The ear cartilage reaches further than the corner of the mouth.

Fault: Ears set high (higher than eye level), thin, short and narrow.

It says this water dog is very close to what the Barbet looks like today.
Those are not tight frizzy/frisé poodle curls.

BODY:
Back: Solid with well sustained topline.

Major problem here with the back end of the dog.

TAIL:
Slightly raised, carried above the horizontal when the dog is in action, low set, forming a slight hook at the tip.It should touch the hocks as of the CTE mtg of 16/08/09.

This is a perfect tail and haunch. On the right, is a tail set you often see but brought by another breed. It is not a correct tail set.

Anourie, brachyourie.

Fault:
Tail set on high, curved over the back, curled over or lying on the croup or loin. Tail naturally absent or too short

Tail fault:

This is a Grand Barbet/ Barbet re-incarnated in the late 80's early 90's , brought on by the crossing of a poodle with a Portuguese water dog. It takes several generations to eliminate that blood.

TAIL:
Slightly raised, carried above the horizontal when the dog is in action, low set, forming a slight hook at the tip.

Défaut:

Fault:
Tail set on high, curved over the back, curled over or lying on the croup or loin. Tail naturally absent or too short.

JARRET/CUISSE:

Cuisses : Légèrement obliques, bien gigotées.
Jarrets : Bas, bien coudés.

Some dogs now have straight hindquarters...with no angulations.

HINDQUARTERS:
Upper thigh: Slightly oblique, well muscled.
Hock: Low, well angulated.

Fault:
• Hindquarters: Upper thigh flat, hocks straight( there are more and more of these types.)[/centrer]

The foot should be set on the pads and not tipped forward like a ballerina. Generally this dog will not have angulations. The hind legs pushed back and a heavy coat will hide the fact. That's why the foot is not flat on the pads.

The angulations should show naturally and not by the feet being on tip-toes to pretend there are angulations.

Mâchoires/dents : Mâchoires d’égale longueur. Articulé en ciseaux. Denture forte. Incisives bien développées et bien rangées.
Jaws/teeth: Jaws of equal length. Scissors bite. Strong teeth. Incisors well developed and well aligned.

On the left: nice square jaw. On the right a jaw that is too narrow and there is not enough room for the teeth, this comes from the pointed nose of the poodle and the PWD.
This is not eliminatory.
